Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for NYC in Inaugural Address
During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious start to his term.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”
Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.
The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A experiment of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
