The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
