The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
