Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
