Amid a defiant signal to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to provide “uninterrupted” supplies of energy resources to India. These remarks came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and asserted their relationship were “immune to foreign coercion.”

A Statement For the West

The statement, delivered Friday, appeared to be a direct challenge at Washington, who have repeatedly attempted to compel New Delhi into curtailing its longstanding relations with Moscow. The context is in response to previous US actions, notably the introduction of trade penalties on India due to its buying of Moscow's energy exports.

“Our nation is a dependable exporter of energy resources and everything needed for the development of India’s economy,” the Russian president said. “We are ready to continue ensuring the consistent flow of energy for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Modi, while not naming energy specifically, supported the sentiment by stating that “energy security has been a strong and crucial cornerstone of the bilateral cooperation.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the summit, in a TV appearance, Putin had challenged Washington's stance on India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “Should America has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India have the same privilege?”

This trip marked his first trip to India after the onset of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations made a clear attempt to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the two leaders was undisturbed.

A Personal Welcome

Taking an rare gesture, Modi met Putin right off the plane. They exchanged a hearty embrace like old friends before holding a private dinner together.

Modi referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a lodestar” and said it was “founded on mutual respect and profound confidence.”

Expanding Strategic Ties

Friday's talks produced multiple significant pacts across military and financial collaboration. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an joint economic plan extending until 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars annually by the target year.

Additionally pledged to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Although Russia remains India's primary source of weapons, its share has reduced over the past decade as India aims to broaden its supply base.

Their communique stressed cooperation in the co-development of advanced weapons platforms, although specific mention of systems like the fifth-generation aircraft were left out.

Overall, Moscow and Delhi affirmed that in the “present intricate, tense, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties stay strong to external pressure.”
