NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Citizens to Submit ICE Videos Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens
New York state AG has launched a fresh online portal urging citizens to provide images and footage of ICE operations throughout New York. This move comes just a day after a high-profile enforcement action rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering mass demonstrations.
American Citizens Arrested In Raid
A congressional representative announced during a midweek briefing that four citizens were arrested and held for "nearly 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Demonstrations broke out in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Every New Yorker deserves to reside free from terror," state officials stated in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and recorded federal operations during the raid, I ask you to share that evidence with my office. We are dedicated to examining these reports and evaluating any legal breaches."
Portal Features
The portal offers options to send photos and videos of the operation, as well as a area to indicate geographic details. Prior to sending, users must mark a option that states that "the office might employ any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, such as in a court case or public report."
Details of the Chinatown Raid
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say involved dozens of ICE personnel, occurred in a popular neighborhood of the city where imitation purses, items, goods and merchandise are commonly traded en masse – typically to sightseers.
Footage of Tuesday's raid reveal multiple masked and armed officers restraining and arresting a individual, and shoving away onlookers. Crowds of residents followed the agents along the roads. An military-style transport was observed moving along the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
In a Wednesday press conference featuring the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be arrested for without cause." He said the persons were let go on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman remarked. "This constitutes a military-style operation to incite tension. It is simply a pretext to provoke conflict for the government to bring in the military to halt violence that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Outrage over the immigration operation rapidly grew – all three NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the incident, as did the state leader.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration selects heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, rather than security. It needs to cease," a contender wrote.
NYC advocacy organizations spoke out as well.
"Federal officers targeted Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, hooded officers and tactical gear to focus on local sellers attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to citizen protection and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," remarked the head of a rights organization.
ICE Policies
Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the agency has said it refrains from take into custody citizens. Yet, external research has discovered that over 170 citizens have been taken illegally by immigration authorities since the beginning of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in New York and around the country recently.
A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Demonstrations targeting federal operations are commonplace along with claims of aggression and abusive practices.
Most recently, a submission submitted by legal entities stated inadequate care of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
