New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD released security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
