New Trump Doctrine Points to The Continent's Fundamental Problem: A Supposed Lack of Racism?

During his initial presidency, commentators frequently advised that the former president's statements should be interpreted earnestly instead of word for word. Yet, subsequent events indicate that this approach may have got it backwards.

An emergent U.S. National Security Strategy alongside multiple statements from U.S. figures, Trump proxies, and Trump himself have precipitated potentially one of the most severe challenges for transatlantic unity, the doctrine that has sustained stability and freedom in Europe since World War II.

From Financial Contributions to Cultural Anxiety

While The initial complaint centered on Europe's alleged failure to fund its own security, his vision has now evolved into a far more alarming outlook.

Colored by racial prejudice and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has spoken about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he has rarely visited and mostly viewed from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

Although the general thrust of this race-baiting is not new, its specific implications for European security are essential to grasp.

In the view of the president and his adherents—a group that includes billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the dissolution of the EU—all statecraft is fundamentally a deal. But, whereas the previous argument was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is fundamentally unworthy because of its shift toward diversity.

Weakening from Within

In his interview, Trump himself connects these ideas in a kind of wish-fulfillment exercise. He concedes that the Kremlin desires a weak Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and in exposing the rifts between Washington and European capitals, he objectively helps Putin by further weakening European unity—all while denying any responsibility.

All of this is playing out at perhaps the most critical moment for Europe since WWII, amid a brutal conflict in Ukraine and rising provocations across the continent.

As European nations draw closer to Ukraine amid persistent threats of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

These developments requires a firm response from capitals across Europe. While some leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been forceful in their rebuttals, including British officials—have opted for a strategy of seeking to placate the White House.

On Tuesday, the UK government refused to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.

They said, "The Prime Minister has a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the London mayor, and is focused on working with both to deliver better outcomes for the British public."

The undeniable truth is that the president intends what he says and says what he means consistently. It is past time to abandon the pretense otherwise.
